Modeling Tips ~ Poses & Hair

with one comment

If you are reading this blog posting, I hope you are also exploring the many facets of our new website here at MAD Agency blog & KMADDcity.com

My name is Risa Bright and I am the MAD Agency manager and lead model. My job here at MAD Agency is endlessly busy and exciting, a new challenge every week!

This is my first post in writing for this page, and my hope is that this column will evolve into a place to get questions answered and  perhaps help you pick up some information that may be of help to you in your modeling career.

In this column I would like to highlight a couple of differences between live modeling work and posing for still photographs.

Modeling work falls into two general categories, live or  runway event and photographic.

Each type of modeling has it’s own knowledge and skills required for the models engaging in them.

POSES

Runway poses are those poses you can smoothly transition into and out of from a walking or standing position.

They must be chosen based on the outfit the model is featuring and be evaluated on their appropriateness for how well they showcase the clothing or items being modeled. Most poses that have exaggerated body twisting or the arms crossed in front of the body will be less useful to clothing modeling but perhaps if you are modeling shoes, the upper body distortion will not be such an issue.

Photographic poses do not need to be smooth or ‘ease in /ease out” style as the runway requires. If you have some poses that are abrupt in their positioning or unnatural in their speed, these are best suited to still photography use. Similarly, the “tippytoes” poses, which are unnatural and distracting on the runway, may have your upper body in a suitable position to be photographed from the waist up where the cartoonish foot angle will be cropped out.

It is most important to always be adding to and updating your pose selection. New and different poses are being released daily in the shops and we risk looking “dated” if the poses we are using are old or just too common.

Most poses are copy, and because of that I have purchased a professional photographic pose stand (also copiable) and filled it with all my copiable poses. There are currently 451 poses in there that I can click through quickly to see what is appropriate for runway or photo work that I have pending. Once the pose is chosen from the pose stand, I just need to get the inventory copy out and have it ready for the assignment.

HAIR

Another thing to consider when styling your avatar for modeling work is hair. Most of the newer hair styles are flexi and will move as you move, creating a realistic appearance. For runway work, hair that is more natural is preferred since it responds to movement and is more lifelike.
There are also many hairstyles that do not move at all! Long ponytails that are entirely static, frozen-in-place hair sculptures that bear no resemblance to real life hair or its kinetic properties. These styles may seem outdated or old fashioned for SL , but they may be appropriate for photo shoots if the styles are complimentary to your look.

For both types of modeling, it is important to be sure you are not wearing any bling, it is distracting and can ruin photographs. The same is true for the eyes that “twinkle”. These bling/twinkle features  also contain scripts which contribute to lag.

For all modeling assignments, whether photo or runway, always remove all personal jewelry, tattoos and piercings, these are things that need not be worn for a photoshoot or runway event where it is the client’s items we want people to notice.

The most important thing to remember in all modeling situations is to keep your focus on the client, featuring their product in the best possible manner while putting aside your own personal appearance. There may be times you are asked to modify your body, skin, hair or other parts of your avatar that are “you” – a true professional does this in the most cheerful and accomodating spirit since it is the client’s wishes that control the assignment and the model is a means to that end.

This is just the tiniest bit of information on topics that have dozens of details to them.

If you have a question or topic you would like to see addressed here, please feel free to drop me a notecard in world , and I will choose future column topics from your suggestions.

Until next time, enjoy your time in SL and keep in touch!

MUISM FASHION SHOW at KMADD City

leave a comment »

KMADD City-  MAD Agency will present the 2008/2009 Fall-Winter Collection on the runway this Saturday, November 8, 2008 at KMADD City.

The Muism mens and womenswear fashion ranges are all original, unique designs and feature Muism’s hallmark ‘flexi-wear’ design. The inspiration for these designs come directly from real sketches and as a result, have a hand-crafted yet clean tailored look.

Muism  was the first ever fashion line in SL to implement thier unique ‘flexi-wear’ design, (where the flexi-prims were attached from just below the chest, giving a dynamic shape and flowing design.)

Muism’s fashion range has also expanded to include hair, skin and accessory lines making them one of the most popular fashion destinations in SL.

With every new season and each new development being watched with clear excitement and anticipation, the Muism brand will strive to keep residents in vogue.

The clothing designs you will see on the show are warm, colorful, cozy and put together in ways that will delight and surprise you.

Warm and comfortable Tartan plaids are featured in jacket detailing, pants and skirts.

Leather appears in jackets, vests, pants and the shiny new Miami Hopper shoes. Warm scarves wrap the neck in a casual drape of soft color and pattern, warding off chills and elevating winterwear to “hot couture”.

The Dark Ash, Maple and Smoke Yeti coats and jackets shown today are particularly plush and luxuriant and are items you will want to be certain to get while their very limited edition time for sale is still in effect. The Yeti is known as a cryptid of great mythology and folklore, after December 31, these limited edition Yeti items from Muism will disappear into the stuff of folklore too.

Build created by Maddox Dupont is called “Muism Guerilla”. Within the confines of this space, you will find elements of conflict, destruction, reconstruction, revolution, and evolution. It seamlessly merges the outside and inside to at once ecapsulate you while giving  you the feeling of being outdoors.
